XI Iberian and Slavonic Conference in the Series Iberian and Slavonic Cultures in Contact and Comparison

11th International Conference in the Series Iberian and Slavonic Cultures in Contact and Comparison

The Spirit of Reforms in/and Constructing Modernity

School of Arts and Humanities – University of Lisbon

16 - 18 May, 2017

In the memory of the late Professor and Friend

Halina Janaszek-Ivaničková (1921 – 12th June 2016), a great specialist in Comparative Slavic Studies and a very close collaborator of CLEPUL–FLUL, CompaRes and CISCR-ICS.

The forthcoming 11th International Iberian-Slavonic Conference aims to provide new contexts surrounding the 500th anniversary of the Luther`s Reformation Manifesto (1517), a landmark in the construction of European modernity, and will thus focus on the analysis, mapping and comparison of a variety of reforming thought, movements and streams, as well as on their evolutions within Iberian and Slavonic cultures. A special focus, however, will be given to the changes in the Cultural Studies methodologies with regard to both cultural spaces in question, as well as to their non-European extensions, namely Ibero-American, Lusophone, Hispanic and Asian experiences and examples, and their cultural imprints resulting from multiple interactions of reforming attitudes and projects.

With its transdisciplinary and multicultural debates, the 11th Iberian-Slavonic Conference in Lisbon aims also to provide a very specific contribution to the CLEPUL-FLUL 2017 event, namely the International Symposium entitled “A Constructor of Modernity: Luther – Theses – 500 years”, to be held 9-11 November, 2017 in Lisbon.

Finally, as the central event of the 11th Week of Iberian-Slavonic Cultural Cooperation (15-20 May, 2017), also to be held at the FLUL, the 2017 Conference will, together with the accompanying socio-cultural events (a round table, specific topical panels, a poetry evening, an exhibition, etc.), also offer an excellent opportunity for fostering peer interaction and friendship and reviewing the present state of the Iberian-Slavonic Cultural Studies, as well as for honouring the memory of our recently deceased dear friend, one of the founding members of CompaRes, Prof. Halina Janaszek-Ivaničková.
